Not only did New Jerseyans come out in big numbers for the Shore’s summer kickoff—they came back, despite undesirable weather, in record-breaking style! On Friday of Memorial Day Weekend, Governor Chris Christie declared the beginning of summer by breaking a Guinness World Record for the world’s longest ribbon cutting (5.51 miles!) to open the Seaside Heights boardwalk. The ribbon was held by more than 1,000 volunteers and stretched across the beach and boardwalk all the way to Island Beach State Park.
Meanwhile, more than a dozen other Shore communities followed suit with similar ribbon-cutting ceremonies. The world’s longest blue ribbon symbolically tied together many seaside towns, and its official “cutting” declared the Shore open for business and ready for another year of memory making. Over the kickoff weekend, events and performances took place throughout the Shore, including live coverage by the TODAY Show, a beach performance by the band fun., guest appearances by the crew from Cake Boss and Miss Teen New Jersey, and performances by the Ocean City High School Chorus, among others. And that’s only the beginning…
This summer at the Shore promises loads of entertainment with a jam-packed calendar of events, performances and festivals all season long. Tons of fun, from throwdowns with Bobby Flay to cranking it up with your favorite bands. We’ve got a Shore Chef Crab Cake Cook-Off, a big event with Restaurant Impossible, surprise celebrities popping up at Job Takeovers and Celebrity Mini Golf, plus a host of other exciting events coming your way.* We’re keeping our calendar constantly updated so you can coordinate your crew and plan ahead, or pick up at a moment’s notice and head over to your favorite Shore town. Keep an eye out for our Stronger than the Storm team, who will be popping in at upcoming events snapping photos, filming and distributing #STTS t-shirts, hats and other campaign goodies. And be sure to give them a kind shout-out on all of your favorite social channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, YouTube, Vimeo) by marking your posts and photos with #STTS. Jersey spirit has never been so, well…strong.
Grants are now available to help New Jerseyans impacted by Superstorm Sandy.
